Buffalo celebrated the projected win of President-elect #JoeBiden and Vice President-elect #KamalaHarris on Saturday, Nov. 7—first at a previously-scheduled daytime rally at Niagara Square and then well into the night at Elmwood & Bidwell.
Hey Instagram, it’s been a minute (and a tough couple of months, tbh). Dropping into your timelines on this eve of #ElectionDay to share two election-related feature stories I’m proud of reporting for @wbfonews. Take a listen if you get a few minutes — you might just hear some voices you haven’t thought about this election season and be reminded that we are a big, diverse country voting for SO many different reasons but sharing an insane (kind of beautiful?) experiment in democracy along the way.
Very excited to share that a project I’ve been working on for months is finally launching on @wbfonews tomorrow. The coronavirus pandemic has infected more than 11,300 people across Western New York. It has also killed at least 762 people in our region, and now, we’re going to bring you some of the personal stories of struggle and loss behind those numbers.
June was an extraordinarily busy month for @wbfonews (and everyone else!), so I wanted to catch up and share a two-part series I reported about how Buffalo parents are talking to their kids about race and racism in the midst of a national reckoning on #policebrutality and #systemicracism. Thank you to the six mothers who shared their personal struggles and experiences for this series. Curiously, no fathers volunteered, though I’m not suggesting that dads aren’t involved in these difficult conversations (dads, you want to talk next??). Link to Part I in bio.
I guess I can finally post this for #716day. Passed my one year milestone in Buffalo in May and I’m so grateful for everyone who has welcomed me, challenged me and shared their story for @wbfonews. Gentle reminder to please support your local public radio station! Please also keep Buffalo a secret.
With a lawsuit now pending, a stark divide remains over Lockport schools' new facial recognition security system—even as #facialrecognition comes under fire for exhibiting racial and gender biases. I reported on that and more in my latest for @wbfonews (link in bio).
The ACLU of New York filed a lawsuit Monday against the New York State Education Department over its approval of the Lockport school district’s facial recognition security system. Lockport—a small city about a half hour outside Buffalo—became the first* district in New York State and one of the first districts in the country to start using facial recognition technology when it activated the AEGIS system (2nd photo) in January. .
Western New York educators gathered at Buffalo City Hall on Tuesday, June 9, in solidarity with the #blacklivesmatter✊🏾 movement. .
"As we continue to battle #covid19, we’re also continuing to battle issues that have plagued our country for generations: continued discrimination against Black people and people of color."—Charles Williams, vice chair of United Healthcare Workers East at Buffalo General Medical Center
